WAGON TRAIN LAKE STATE RECREATION AREA HABITAT IMPROVEMENT PROJECT
Local Conservation in Action
The Big Game Conservation Association – Lincoln Branch set out to complete a project close to home. In the spring of 2018, members began working with a Nebraska Game & Parks Commission biologist responsible for Wagon Train Lake State Recreation Area.

The primary objective was to establish a sustainable food source to benefit deer and other wildlife species utilizing the area.

PROJECT IMPLEMANTATION
After identifying a suitable location, approximately 2.5 acres were selected for habitat improvement.
• The area was shredded to prepare the site
• Vegetation was treated to control unwanted weeds and grasses
• A brassicas forage mix was planted

This blend was selected specifically to provide a valuable food source extending late into the winter months — a critical period for wildlife survival.
WILDLIFE BENEFITS
The project supports:
• Improved forage availability
• Enhanced habitat diversity
• Seasonal nutritional support
• Long-term wildlife health
