POWDERHORN WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT AREA
Habitat Improvement Project
In the summer of 2014, the Big Game Conservation Association initiated a habitat improvement project at Powderhorn Wildlife Management Area.

Following years of regional flooding, the area experienced significant encroachment from invasive tree species and undesirable vegetation, negatively impacting habitat quality.

Working in coordination with Nebraska Game and Parks Commission biologist Russ Hamer, BGCA members developed and executed a targeted habitat restoration plan.

VEGETATION MANAGEMENT & LAND CLEARING
The project’s initial objective focused on removing invasive saplings and dense undergrowth.
Using a Bobcat skid steer equipped with a brush cutter attachment, BGCA volunteers cleared approximately 10 acres of unwanted brush over a two-day work period.

Following clearing operations:
• Treated areas were professionally sprayed
• Existing planting zones were prepared
• Habitat diversity goals were established
FOOD PLOT DEVELOPMENT
Several designated planting areas were enhanced to improve wildlife forage and cover.
BGCA volunteers utilized a no-till drill, generously provided through the local Pheasants Forever chapter.

Plantings included:
• Perennial alfalfa & clover blends
• Grain & brassica combinations
• Sorghum, tall grasses & clover mixes
One established area was intentionally left untreated to preserve ideal brood cover for pheasants, turkeys, and other wildlife.
This rotational strategy continues to support habitat quality and seasonal wildlife needs.
ONGOING HABITAT IMPROVEMENTS
Restoration efforts extended into 2015, including:
• Additional clearing & planting
• Establishment of green-line fire breaks
• Continued vegetation management

Previously cleared areas were seeded with alfalfa and clover mixes to strengthen habitat resilience and long-term management objectives.
COMMUNITY STEWARDSHIP & CLEANUP
During project activities, BGCA members conducted a large-scale cleanup of the surrounding parking area.
Over five large bags of trash were removed, reinforcing BGCA’s commitment to responsible land stewardship.

Visitors are encouraged to help preserve Nebraska’s public lands by packing out all materials brought into the area.
PROJECT SUPPORT & PARTNERSHIPS
BGCA extends sincere appreciation to:
Dinkel’s Implement
For donating the use of a tractor supporting planting operations.

Pheasants Forever (Dodge County Chapter)
For providing access to the no-till drill.

These partnerships play a vital role in advancing meaningful conservation work across Nebraska.
