LAKE WANAHOO RECREATION AREA
Habitat Improvement Project
The Big Game Conservation Association believes that youth represent the future of conservation and Nebraska’s outdoor heritage.

With this guiding principle, BGCA initiated one of its early habitat improvement efforts at Lake Wanahoo Recreation Area — a designated youth-only hunting area.

By enhancing habitat quality and wildlife access opportunities, BGCA seeks to help foster meaningful outdoor experiences for Nebraska’s next generation.

HABITAT PREPARATION & PLANTING
In the summer of 2013, BGCA members began restoration work on approximately 15 acres at the north end of the lake.
Project activities included:
• Vegetation spraying & mowing
• Ground preparation & tilling
• Strategic wildlife plantings

These improvements were designed to enhance both wildlife nutrition and long-term habitat management.
PERENNIAL HABITAT ENHANCEMENTS
Approximately 12 acres were seeded with an alfalfa and clover blend along the tree line.
This planting strategy:
• Increased forage availability
• Improved habitat diversity
• Established a green fire break
ANNUAL FOOD PLOT DEVELOPMENT
An additional 3 acres were planted with a diverse blend of:
• Sorghums
• Clovers
• Brassicas
• Grains

These food plots continue to be replanted annually, providing supplemental nutrition for deer and other wildlife species.
YOUTH ACCESS & WILDLIFE VIEWING
To further support youth hunting opportunities, BGCA installed a Dillon Manufacturing blind mounted on a 10-foot tower with porch and staircase.
The blind supports:
• Youth hunting activities
• Wildlife observation
• Bird watching
• Outdoor photography
Positioned near a bald eagle nesting area, the structure has become a valuable resource for both educational and recreational wildlife experiences.
Visitors are encouraged to responsibly utilize the blind and share their experiences through BGCA’s Facebook community.
EXPANDED HABITAT & ACCESS IMPROVEMENTS
Building on the success of the initial installation, BGCA has since added two additional elevated blinds at Lake Wanahoo.
Each blind location is supported by strategically developed food plots designed to:
• Enhance wildlife activity
• Improve hunting opportunities
• Support habitat diversity
• Encourage youth participation

These continued improvements reflect BGCA’s long-term commitment to expanding safe, accessible, and rewarding outdoor experiences.
EXPERIENCE & STEWARDSHIP
BGCA members bring extensive hands-on conservation experience, including:
• Food plot development
• Habitat enhancement projects
• Educational field days
• Permanent structure installations

These collective efforts reflect BGCA’s enduring commitment to Nebraska’s wildlife resources.
